This lecture is an edited version of one given to first year USC graphic design students over a four-year period.   The term Environmental Graphic Design came into use in the 1970’s but its antecedents go back thousands of years. Most of my talk concerns what we see around us today, both in the urban landscape and inside our buildings. I examine the design of signage and the often-hilarious mistakes that corporations, councils and companies make.
