Without our wonderful volunteer helpers U3A Noosa wouldn’t be the hive of activity we know and love. Almost everyone volunteers their time including the president, receptionists, management committee and tutors. Each month we plan to introduce you to a member of the volunteer staff who contribute so selflessly to the smooth running of U3A Noosa.
This month meet Judy Ashwin, who works on the reception desk on Thursdays and who also helps to keep the library shelves in good order. She has been a volunteer at U3A Noosa for three years since moving to Tewantin from Brisbane.
Judy explains that the role of those who work on the reception desk is to greet members and visitors when they arrive at Michell House, to answer phone calls, reply to emails and process memberships, to deal with a range of enquiries and to handle myriad tasks ranging from photocopying to checking supplies for the coffee machines.
In her long professional career until retirement Judy was an HR officer – for a few years she was based in Weipa, a remote mining town on the Gulf of Carpentaria. She also worked as a library assistant at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and later as HR officer for the UQ library. Now, as a volunteer for Noosa Library Service, she continues to share her passion for books, choosing and delivering books to people who are housebound. Judy, who loves to keep busy, also volunteers at Noosa National Park information centre.
“Volunteering keeps me occupied and engaged now that I am no longer in paid work. I like being with people and giving back to the community,” she says.
