Mis/Disinformation on Social Media: What is it and How to Spot it.



In this session you will learn the differences between misinformation and disinformation on social media and the negative consequences that can arise when people share it within their online networks. You will also learn techniques to check the credibility of information before sharing it that are in line with the United Nations’ Pause Campaign encouraging social media users to Take Care Before You Share.

About our Speaker:

Dr Karen Sutherland has 20+ years industry experience, is a Senior Lecturer in Public Relations at the University of the Sunshine Coast and recently won the Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH) Award for Education, Innovation and Employability. In 2020, she also won the Social Media Marketing Institute’s Best Social Media Educator of the Year Award. Karen is the author of Strategic Social Media Management – Theory and Practice by Palgrave Macmillan, co-author of Public Relations and Strategic Communication by Oxford University Press and Co-Founder and Social Media Specialist at digital marketing agency, Dharana Digital.
