President’s Report

2024 Year

U3A noosa has again enjoyed good success. 2024 has been one of our better years with the accomplishment some significant positive outcomes and many achievements, all of which will help ensure we remain in a healthy and robust position in the year ahead.

The upward growth trend continues with member numbers markedly increasing and surpassing the previous three years and we’ve already had a record number of first-time members join for 2025.

The expanding curriculum has ensured class attendances are high overall and the recruitment of several new tutors and the return of others, has increased the range and diversity of the courses and classes on offer. We have fortunately, been able to accommodate the increasing number in Michell House, with only two classes held off-site.

Our finances are healthy and we’re in a sound and secure position moving forward.

A member survey conducted in September 2024 reflected and overall high level of member satisfaction.  Suggestions for improvements have been discussed by management committee and where reasonable and possible, affirmative action taken.

However, we are now faced with an internal threat.  We’re finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a high level of efficiency with dwindling support at management level.  Management Committee is now operating with the same few dedicated volunteers year after year, and those few are taking on multiple roles to keep things running.  Not only is this an unreasonable expectation, it’s also counter-productive and will see future stagnation and decline.  New approaches, ideas and input are vital for continuing health, development and success.

As a charitable no-profit organisation we rely wholly on volunteers and as members of U3A noosa, we each bear the responsibility of contributing but we are in the unfortunate position where members generally feel entitled to consume but not necessarily to contribute.

Over my seven years of presidency, there have been many improvements and advancements, but also some set-backs with unforeseen external threats, such as the pandemic. Some of the more notable achievements include:

  • Overseeing a successful outcome of our Development Application with Noosa Council to continue operating in the capacity of adult education.
  • Navigating the pandemic with minimum fallout, both financially and the well-being of our members.
  • Developing and implementing a five-year Strategic Plan and maintaining an annual Business Plan.
  • Developing official U3A noosa policies.
  • Developing and maintaining procedural manuals for tutors and reception
  • Two yearly member satisfaction surveys.
  • Introducing vouchers for class levies, simplifying the banking and cash handling.
  • Expanding the membership data base into reception allowing streamlining of operations for staff and for member convenience. Recording of attendances electronically.
  • Changing and improving membership cost structure thereby keeping membership fees low and fair for all. Maintaining inclusive adult membership.
  • Networking of IT systems in the Computer Room.
  • Establishing an AV system in the MC Studio enabling accommodation of a multiple range of courses.
  • Continually expanding the curriculum to include a diverse range of courses and classes. Introduction of new tutors.
  • Ongoing maintenance and improvements including painting of Michell House. Maintaining a good working relationship with our landlords, USC.

None of this was possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Management Committee have performed above and beyond, which is to be applauded given the increasing pressure they’re experiencing generally. We’ve finished the year in a very secure and sound financial position.  All are to be congratulated.

Reception staff continue to provide exemplary service being ever available and happy to look after our many and complex needs.  Thank you for looking after us so well.

Our wonderful tutors who continue to step forward providing interesting and informative courses/classes for our enjoyment.  Give yourselves a collective pat on the back.

Those on the numerous sub-committees such as curriculum, events, newsletter and libraries who quietly and efficiently keep the wheels turning.

There are some individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes and are well deserving of special mention.

Mikes Hines – Web Manager, Friday Talks Convener and tutor.

Alan Roberts – AV technical support and tutor.

Graeme Dickason – IT technician and support.  Graeme troubleshoots for us from a distance and continues to come to our rescue and get us through some tricky IT issues.

And lastly, but just as importantly, we thank our members for their loyalty, and I personally wish to thank you all for the goodwill and support you’ve extended to me over the years.
